Trying to imagine a life that does not include seeking the approval of others is not something most people spend a lot of time considering. Why would anyone want such a thing? Another question might be why does what other's think and feel regarding how we live make such a big difference in our lives?
Standing independent of others has not been, traditionally through human evolution, a goal. We often admire and idolize people who exhibit such strength of character but rarely consider ourselves as contenders in this regard. Djehuty suggests here that our admiration of the self-contained individual is actually a characteristic that we we seek in ourselves but it is not cultivated or advertised in society as a valuable personal goal. It is valuable only in witnessing it in another.
In religious and government systems, requiring approval of others is a long standing way of controlling people and controlling people is what maintains the status quo and an illusion of safety. These have long been the hallmarks of what is considered valuable and it has come at a cost. We are fixed in a cycle of power over/power under. This is not the only way to organize the fabric of society or to cultivate faith.
Not meeting the standards set by goals and imperatives established by others dictates a cultivation of judgement, shame and guilt in endless cycles. This has gone on for millennia and will continue until one decides they can understand that they are going to make mistakes and answer to and learn from them without having to be punished by an outside person or organization. Once one recognizes that they are a work in progress, allows themselves some compassion for errors and takes responsibility for their actions, it ceases to be answering to and pleasing others and becomes about cultivating self respect and values. In withdrawing validation and approval, a lifestyle of setting and maintaining a standard for the self is cultivated. What was once established as a way to control people can evolve into a way of being in control of the self for authenticity of every individual to be recognized and thrive.
