Death, as we perceive it, is something to fear. Our animal bodies react in survival when threatened validating that fear. It is a natural part of ourselves to recoil from life threatening situations. What I think is different for us as opposed to, say, a rabbit is that we are humans in a process of gaining awareness of this need for a balance between our soul existence and our animal human existence. This teaching/learning situation keeps us in a constant movement towards a greater alignment of these two aspects of life that are in relationship.
Even when in comfort, rarely do people embrace the reality of their death and if too cavalier, they are considered contrary or psychotic and void of feeling. Indeed they might be, for not allowing the weight of a life ending its due respect is not paying attention to ones personal connection to being a human who dies. Deaths of others effect us deeply. We can recoil on our own mortality through someone else's death. There is a sense of something or someone missing within our heart space and for our heart health we must open to the reality that we have lost to death someone of value. This is painful. In general we are not fond of pain. Nothing hurts quite as devastatingly as realizing one and/or a loved one has an expiry date.
Djehuty introduces us here to teachings about death and how our perception of death is primarily dictated by faith based dogmas that are dependent upon a person's desire to find meaning. A meaning is served up to us and our loyalty is tithed to the belief.
This subject is a sensitive one. We are, in the west, a death phobic culture that is only recently, by virtue of terminally ill diagnoses, placed in the position to think more about death before the act. These applied medical procedures may be a part of our coming around to opening our perspective and allowing ourselves to consider the fears about death that we have unconsciously adopted. We are finding the words to more openly talk about death and the more we talk and share; the less we must fear our mortality.
